Engineering FAQ
Answers to the most common questions about Texas engineering, permits, inspections, and construction support. Can't find your answer? Our licensed engineers are one call away.
Civil & Site Engineering
A civil engineer handles site development design — including grading, drainage, stormwater management, utility infrastructure, erosion control, and site plans — and prepares the permit-ready civil construction documents required by Texas cities and counties. ALFA Engineering delivers PE-stamped civil plans that meet local jurisdiction requirements statewide.
Structural & Foundation Engineering
Much of Texas sits on expansive clay soils that shrink and swell with moisture changes, which can crack and heave foundations. Proper foundation engineering — including post-tension slabs, drilled piers, or pier-and-beam systems — accounts for soil conditions and building loads to prevent structural distress. We design foundations tailored to Texas geotechnical conditions.
MEP Engineering
MEP engineering covers Mechanical (HVAC), Electrical (power, lighting, fire alarm), and Plumbing (water, sanitary, gas) system design. We deliver coordinated, permit-ready MEP construction documents including load calculations, equipment selection, panel schedules, and specifications that meet Texas energy codes.
Inspections & Windstorm Certification
A WPI-8 certificate is issued by the Texas Department of Insurance after applicable windstorm inspection and documentation requirements are completed and accepted. It's typically needed for properties in designated catastrophe-area coastal counties to obtain windstorm insurance through TWIA. ALFA Engineering provides TDI windstorm engineering and inspection services and assists qualifying projects through the applicable TDI certification process — the Texas Department of Insurance issues the WPI-8 certificate.
Permits & Compliance
Yes. We handle building permit applications, plan submittals, and plan review coordination with cities and counties across Texas, plus TxDOT, TCEQ, TDI, and floodplain development permits. We know the requirements for the jurisdictions we serve statewide.
