Comprehensive stormwater management engineering for residential, commercial, and municipal development projects across Texas. Our licensed Professional Engineers design detention and retention systems, perform hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, prepare SWPPP documents, and ensure compliance with TCEQ Construction General Permit and local MS4 stormwater quality regulations.
What stormwater management may include
Depending on the agreed scope, the work listed below may be included in a stormwater management proposal.
When stormwater management may be needed
Stormwater management may be needed for new development, redevelopment, commercial site development, subdivisions, and any project that increases impervious cover or modifies runoff patterns — where detention or retention, water quality best management practices (BMPs), construction-site erosion control, or post-construction MS4 compliance is required. ALFA's licensed civil engineers design stormwater detention and retention systems, perform hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, prepare SWPPP documents, design post-construction water quality BMPs, and support TCEQ Construction General Permit and local MS4 stormwater compliance. The specific scope depends on the project, the permitting authority, and the reviewing jurisdiction.
Stormwater management is the broader discipline covering detention, water quality, conveyance, and regulatory compliance. It overlaps with several related services: detention pond design (sizing and routing of storage basins), hydrology & hydraulic analysis (HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS modeling), SWPPP preparation (construction-site erosion and sediment control plans), stormwater quality inspection (post-construction BMP inspections), and drainage design (site runoff conveyance). Your proposal defines which sub-scopes are included for your project.
Project steps
- 1Records & site review — ALFA reviews available survey, topographic, drainage, and prior stormwater information along with your proposed development and any agency or MS4 notices.
- 2Hydrologic & hydraulic analysis — existing and proposed runoff, drainage areas, peak flows, and conveyance are evaluated against the applicable stormwater criteria using methods appropriate to the project and the reviewing agency.
- 3Detention, retention & water quality design — detention/retention storage and outlet sizing, post-construction water quality BMPs, and stormwater conveyance are designed as scoped.
- 4SWPPP & erosion control (when included) — construction SWPPP documents and erosion and sediment control plans are prepared for TCEQ Construction General Permit coverage where applicable.
- 5Agency submittal & comments — ALFA coordinates the submittal with the reviewing jurisdiction and responds to agency comments; the authority having jurisdiction makes the final permit decision.
Stormwater requirements are set by TCEQ (the Construction General Permit, TXR150000), local MS4 programs, and the reviewing jurisdiction's drainage and stormwater criteria, and depend on project conditions such as impervious cover, drainage area, downstream conveyance, and location. ALFA does not publish generic thresholds and does not guarantee permit approval, regulatory compliance, or TCEQ/MS4 acceptance. Requirements for your project are confirmed with TCEQ, your MS4 authority, and the applicable reviewing jurisdiction.
Information needed for a quote
- Property address
- Proposed use or development concept
- Site acreage
- Building area (if known)
- Existing and proposed impervious cover (if known)
- Survey or topographic information (if available)
- Prior stormwater reports, studies, or models (if any)
- Agency or MS4 notices (if available)
You don't need all of these to start the conversation. Share what you have and ALFA will help identify what else is needed for your proposal.
Availability: Stormwater management design is available statewide. On-site visits, when needed, are scheduled based on project location.
